What to Consider when Planning a Hiking Elopement

Decide as a couple on what kind of hike you want

The first thing you want to do is think about the difficulty level or amount of ruggedness you’re willing to tackle in a hike, and how far you want to go. Usually the best views are further down the trails, but there are options for every couple regardless of hiking experience! If you are planning on bringing a few guests to your elopement, you’ll want to consider their level of hiking experience as well.

Choose a hiking trail

Decide what scenery you’d like to be surrounded by as you exchange vows. AllTrails is a very handy app for discovering the best trails nearby. With a bit of research you can find a landscape that you’ve only ever dreamed of getting married in!

Prepare for your hike

Here are a few tips to consider as you prepare for your hike!

Tip #1: You and your partner can either wear your wedding dress and suit while you hike, or keep them in your backpack and change when you reach your destination. For dresses, it’s best to look for fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily, and secure it in a waterproof garment bag if possible.

Tip #2: Regardless of what you plan on wearing for your ceremony, sturdy hiking shoes are a must!

Tip #3: To safely transport your bridal bouquet, wrap the stems in a damp paper towel and secure with a rubber band. Then, tie a Ziploc bag or plastic grocery sack around the stems to keep the moisture in. Carefully place the arrangement in a backpack side pocket, or carry it along the way. This will make sure those pretty blooms stay in good shape all day long!

Tip #4: Remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, bug spray, GPS, first aid kit, and warm layers (depending on the weather). You can never be overly prepared on your wedding day, and with an activity that requires extra energy - comfort is key!

Tip #5: Finally, you should consider the items you want to have with you to celebrate your elopement post-ceremony. Whether it’s picnic supplies, a small cake or treats, champagne, vow books, or mementos - bring ‘em along! Side note: don’t forget to pack it all up before you leave, we want to make sure to protect the environment and leave no trace!
